Celebrating 100 Years of Black History

March 27, 2026/in Riverhead News /by Lilla Debowski

Our school recently came together to celebrate Black History Month with a meaningful and inspiring event centered around the theme “100 Years of Black History.” The program highlighted the rich history, achievements, and contributions of Black people over the past century, while also encouraging reflection on progress and continued growth.

Students, staff, and families gathered to honor Black voices past and present through powerful stories, reflections, and moments of celebration. The event created an uplifting atmosphere filled with pride, learning, and connection, reminding everyone of the importance of recognizing and appreciating diverse histories and cultures.

The energy throughout the event was truly special, as our community engaged in celebrating Black excellence and the lasting impact it has had on shaping our world today. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together, reflect, and continue building a culture of respect and inclusion within our school.

We are grateful to everyone who participated and helped make this celebration a success. Events like this help strengthen our community and ensure that the legacy of Black history continues to be honored and remembered.

School Calendar Adjustment Due to Weather Closure

March 24, 2026/in Riverhead News /by Lilla Debowski

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Due to the significant snowfall across Long Island, school was closed on Tuesday, February 24 to allow our team time to safely clear and prepare our buildings for the return of students and staff.

As a result of this emergency closure, we have made an adjustment to the school calendar. Friday, April 3, which was originally scheduled as part of Spring Break, will now be a Superintendent’s Conference Day. There will be no school for students on this day, as staff will be engaged in professional development.

Please note that Thursday, April 2 will remain a Superintendent’s Conference Day as previously scheduled, and there will also be no school for students on that day.

We appreciate your understanding and flexibility as we make this necessary adjustment to ensure we meet required instructional time while maintaining a safe learning environment.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the main office.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Riverhead Charter School

Riverhead Charter School Presents The Little Mermaid Jr.

March 10, 2026/in Riverhead News /by Lilla Debowski

Riverhead Charter School is excited to announce our upcoming production of The Little Mermaid Jr., a vibrant musical adaptation of the beloved underwater story. Directed by Mrs. Gebler and musical directed by Mrs. Slomin, our talented students have been working diligently to bring this magical tale to life through weeks of rehearsal, collaboration, and creative exploration.

Based on the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen and the animated film by The Walt Disney Company, The Little Mermaid Jr. follows Ariel, a curious young mermaid who dreams of exploring the world above the sea. Fascinated by human life, Ariel makes a daring deal with the sea witch Ursula in hopes of becoming human and winning the heart of Prince Eric. Along the way, she learns powerful lessons about courage, identity, friendship, and the importance of using one’s voice.

Our student performers have embraced the challenge of bringing this story to the stage. Throughout the rehearsal process, students are developing important theatre skills such as vocal projection, character development, stage movement, and ensemble collaboration. They are learning how to analyze scenes, understand character motivations, and communicate emotion through both their voice and body.

In addition to performing, students are also exploring the many behind-the-scenes roles that make theatre possible, including stage management, costume organization, props management, sound operation, and lighting. These responsibilities help students understand that theatre is a collaborative art form where every role contributes to the success of the production.

The dedication and hard work of our students has been inspiring to watch. Each rehearsal has been filled with creativity, teamwork, and determination as students support one another and grow more confident on stage. Through this process, they are not only preparing for a performance, but also developing skills in communication, problem-solving, leadership, and perseverance that will serve them well beyond the theatre.

We are incredibly proud of our performers and crew and look forward to sharing their hard work with the Riverhead Charter School community. Join us as we dive “under the sea” and celebrate the imagination, talent, and dedication of our students in this exciting production of The Little Mermaid Jr..

Snow Day – Schools Closed on Monday, February 23

February 22, 2026/in Riverhead News /by Lilla Debowski

Dear Riverhead Charter School Families,

Due to the State of Emergency declared by Governor Kathy Hochul and the most recent guidance from the New York State Education Department, all schools will be closed on Monday, February 23.  No remote instruction will take place.

Forecasts are calling for heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerous travel conditions, including reduced visibility and hazardous roads. After carefully reviewing the latest state recommendations and local weather advisories, the school has determined that this decision is in the best interest of student, family, and staff safety and well-being.

We encourage everyone to monitor official weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel, and take appropriate safety precautions during the storm.

Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership. We will provide additional updates if necessary.

Sincerely,
Riverhead Charter School
